Kalka-Shimla Railway

 Kalka-Shimla Railway is a 96km long, single track line. It was built in 1910 to provide service to Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Nearest Railway station from Shimla is Kalka.  The Kalka-Shimla route is a narrow gauge track and the main attraction of it, are the tunnels. Kalka – Shimla toy train route consist of 104 tunnels, out of which one does not exist anymore. It is a 5 to 6 hours ride. The longest tunnel is the Barog tunnel; the train takes 3 minutes to cross it. The tourist points which are covered by the toy train are Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Barog, Taradevi, Summer hill and Shimla. Shivalik Deluxe, Rail Motor, Shimla Express, Himalayan Queen and Shimla Kalka passenger are the five trains that run between these routes and there are few holiday special trains also.

Shimla Railway Station

Shimla railway station is situated in Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh, India. It lies on UNESCO World Heritage Site Kalka–Shimla Railway. The hill railway station is located 5,092 ft above sea level. SML is the station code for Shimla Railway station . The 610 mm (2 ft) wide narrow gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway was constructed by Delhi-Ambala-Kalka Railway Company and opened for traffic in 1903. In 1905 the line was regauged to 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) wide narrow gauge. Source – Shimla Railway station .

Kalka, the nearest railway station to Shimla, situated at a distance of 96 km from Shimla. To reach Shimla it takes 5-6 hours from over here. Many tunnels are on this Shimla and Kalka route with the longest being 1.2 km. It has some beautiful places like Mughal garden,  Timber trail, Kali Mata temple. Our suggestion will be do travel through all the places in Kalka first before leaving for Shimla. The train service between Kalka and Shilmla is very good and availability of trains is easy, On an average everyday there are 4-6 trains in this route.Kalka is situated in the laps of the Himalayas and one of the important cities in Himachal Pradesh. Its popular for it’s scenic beauty and nature. It is a known place for great family vacation and tour with family.

The city is a unique combination of hills, spurs and valleys to the North and East; a network ofmountain ranges which are crossed at a distance, by a magnificent crescent of new peaks, the mountains of Kullu and Spiti in North, the central range of the Eastern Himalayas in the east and South east. Emerging as a nostalgic reminder of their country, for the British officers, posted in the region, the town went on to occupy the centre stage during the hey days of the Raj .
